If you are a driver or are working in any other facet of the trucking industry, I think we can all agree that everyone (shippers, carriers, drivers, dispatchers, managers, executives, etc. ) needs to be more aware of the many problems and hurdles that this industry faces. We have ALL (and I do mean ALL) heard the constant stories regarding the 'driver shortage' and what companies are doing to attract new drivers. That, however, is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the many changes that this industry not only needs but is also beginning to see as we move into the 2020s. Autonomous and electric vehicles, block-chain, and driver wages are just a few of the topics being discussed regularly.
If you are a reader asking yourself: "Why should we care so much about the trucking industry?"; well here are just a few reasons:
- $738.9 Billion in gross freight revenues (primary shipments only)
- 70.9% of total domestic tonnage shipped
- 97.3% of all trucking companies operate fewer than 20 trucks
- 7.4 million people employed due to jobs relating to trucking activity
"Nobody would be hurt more by not being able to deliver the goods than the America public, and we as the trucking industry certainly don't want to leave the America shelves empty."-Thomas Pokrywka, former NTA president.
With this blog, I along with the other writers who will be contributing content, and the rest of Truckers America Corp, are looking to slowly educate everyone on the real-world issues facing our economy, our safety, and our trucking industry. Additionally, I don't know about you guys, but I know there is a TON of cool tech being implemented in the trucking industry. We will also be looking to take an unbiased and well informed look at many of the controversial topics surrounding the new technology being pushed in an industry that so desperately needs it.
If there is one thing I think we can all agree on, it is to be up-front, truthful, and most importantly: just tell it how it is. So, here is to the launch of an interesting, forward-looking, not easily offended, no nonsense blog that we hope helps all of our readers stay informed. Our goal is to let you, our audience know what the problems REALLY are in trucking and transportation. Let's create a Trucker's America instead of ignoring it.
